Phone Usage & Connectivity

Stay connected throughout Europe without breaking the bank

What Will It Cost?

If you are traveling to Europe, phone costs aren't going to break the bank, but it's the question everyone asks. Here's the straightforward answer: your carrier's international plan costs a bit more but everything just works. Your number, your calls, your texts — all seamless.

  • $12/day ($6/day for additional lines on your plan)
  • Capped at 10 days per billing cycle (not per trip) — if your 2-week trip falls within one cycle, you'll pay a max of $120. If it spans two cycles, you could pay for all 14 days ($168). Timing matters.
  • Uses your existing plan's data, talk, and text
  • Automatic — activates when you use your phone abroad
  • $12/day per line
  • No billing cycle cap — you pay for every day you use it
  • 5GB high-speed data per 24-hour session, then unlimited at 3G speeds
  • Check if your Unlimited Plus or Welcome plan includes 3 free TravelPass days

Verizon tip: For trips of 9 days or longer, Verizon's $100/month International Monthly Plan is a better deal than TravelPass.

T-Mobile Customers: You're Already Covered

If you're on a Magenta plan, check your benefits before buying anything — you might already be set.

  • Unlimited texting and data in 215+ countries included
  • Data speeds may be slower (2G) unless you add a high-speed pass
  • 5GB high-speed data included with Magenta MAX

This is why eSIM isn't automatically the move for T-Mobile customers — you might already be set.

Tech-Savvy and Want to Save? Consider an eSIM

Most US phones are tied to a carrier until they're paid off — which can take 2-3 years even if you don't notice a separate charge on your bill. And here's the part that surprises people: once it's paid off, it's still locked. You have to contact your carrier to request an unlock.

How to Check:

  • iPhone: Settings → General → About → look for "Carrier Lock"
  • Android: Settings → About Phone → look for "Network Lock"

If it says "No SIM restrictions," you're good to go.

A digital SIM card you download to your phone before departure. No physical card to swap.

eSIMs are data only — no native calls or SMS. You'll rely on WhatsApp and iMessage for messaging. WiFi calling can work over eSIM data, but it's not as reliable as your carrier's international plan — especially for incoming calls.

  • iPhone XS or newer, or recent Android flagship
  • Unlocked phone (see above)
  • Phone must support eSIM (most phones from 2019 onward)
